Title:  Control Systems Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY

The Control Systems Engineer is required to administer, support, trouble-shoot, repair, document, build and commission complex computer-based process control, instrumentation systems and applications.  This person is responsible for maintaining the operational performance of the refinery DCS, APC, PLC and other complex instrumentation systems to meet operational goals, and to make improvements to increase refinery productivity and efficiency.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, computer science, informational technology or electronics preferred.

• Other equivalent degree or relevant experience will be considered

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Experience in Process Control Network architecture with equivalent process control tools is highly desirable. Experience with alarm management, abnormal situation management and APC applications is also desirable. 

• At least 3 years of DCS experience and/or programming experience, strongly preferred.

• Knowledge and experience with DCS and PLC systems, instrumentation, field wiring practice and troubleshooting.

• Experience working with P&ID’s, Instrument loop drawings and DCS graphics.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

• System maintenance support including problem diagnosis, unscheduled maintenance repairs, planned preventive maintenance and system upgrades.

•  DCS programming, control configuration changes, graphic display building. Also responsible for    Advanced Process Controls support including multivariable and model predictive control applications. PLC programming may also be required.

•  Improve process control schemes to optimize refinery unit performance. Identifies new profit opportunities for unit optimization and introduces new technologies to the refinery.

•  As part of the controls group team, provide technical support on the Foxboro IA, Honeywell DCS, PLC, Triconex SIS and other complex special purpose control systems as required. Must be able to work with a team of multiple disciplines to support ongoing process control system improvements and new project initiatives.   

•  Safety shutdown system testing and the development of test procedures.

•  Educate and support operations personnel on the function of unit process controls, monitor control loop performance and tune control loops.

•  Manage field installation, loop check, construction, commissioning and system testing for projects as required.

• Support the refinery 24-hour on-call DCS emergency procedures.

• Follow refinery safe work practices and ensure that all DCS support work follows the refinery Process Safety Management procedures.

Other duties as required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Full-time

Works 9 hour shifts, on a 9/80 schedule.  Safety glasses, earplugs, gloves, steel-toed shoes, hard hats, Nomex, and respirator used when necessary.  Must be able to take call outs and work overtime as needed.  Cannot be afraid of heights or of being in confined spaces such as drums, towers or tanks. 

Evening and after-hours work required.
