The Role 

Reporting to the Control Systems Supervisor you will be responsible for the operational performance of the refinery DCS, APC and PLC.  As part of your specific responsibilities, in the following areas, you will: 

  • Assist control systems engineer, process control engineer and control systems supervisor with troubleshooting problems and applying proper corrective actions.   
  • Communicate with operations and console operators to make operability improvements including DCS graphic modifications, alarm improvements and minor control modifications.
  • Collaborate with instrumentation technicians on outside of DCS network instrumentation installations, modifications and repairs.   
  • Preventive maintenance and monitoring the health of control systems.  Coordinate timely repairs to hardware and software without interrupting a live process.  
  • System maintenance support including problem diagnosis, unscheduled maintenance repairs, planned preventive maintenance and system upgrades.
  • DCS programming, control configuration changes, graphic display building. Also responsible for    Advanced Process Controls support including multivariable and model predictive control applications. PLC programming may also be required.
  • Improve process control schemes to optimize refinery unit performance. Identifies new profit opportunities for unit optimization and introduces new technologies to the refinery.
  • As part of the controls group team, provide technical support on the Foxboro IA, Honeywell TDC3000 & Experion, PLC, Triconex SIS and other complex special purpose control systems as required. Must be able to work with a team of multiple disciplines to support ongoing process control system improvements and new project initiatives.   
  • Safety shutdown system testing and the development of test procedures.
  • Educate and support operations personnel on the function of unit process controls, monitor control loop performance and tune control loops.
  • Manage field installation, loop check, construction, commissioning and system testing for projects as required.
  • Support the refinery 24-hour on-call DCS emergency procedures.
  •  Follow refinery safe work practices and ensure that all DCS support work follows the refinery Process Safety Management procedures.
  • Other duties as required.

The Requirements 

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Control Systems Specialist opportunity, you will have: 

    • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, computer science, informational technology, or electronics preferred.
    • Other equivalent degree or relevant experience will be considered
    •   At least 3 years of maintenance and configuration experience with DCS (preferably Foxboro IA) in a refinery, chemical plant or similar. Control systems maintenance support includes problem diagnostics and problem solving with operator workstations/clients, field controllers, i/o hardware, power supplies, network switches, etc.  Configuration experience includes DCS configuration/programming, DCS graphics, control application support.    
    • Practical experience with industrial automation and control systems hardware and software in process control applications.  
    • A working knowledge of industrial networking protocols such as Modbus serial and Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet interfaces.
    • Available for on-call and call-out response to operational needs and resolving control system issues in a timely manner.     
    • Follow refinery safe work practices and ensure that all DCS support follows the refinery PSM procedures.
