Title:  Instrumentation Reliability Engineer

The Role 

Reporting to the Reliability Superintendent, you will be responsible for making recommendations to improve the reliability of refinery electrical and pneumatic instrumentation systems. An individual in this position is responsible for a variety of projects and assignments including maintenance an upgrading of refinery electrical and pneumatic instrumentation systems, design engineering and troubleshooting. As part of your specific responsibilities, in the following areas, you will: 


  • Provide specifications and installation guidelines for electrical and pneumatic instrumentation systems. Provides technical leadership to others in the field of electrical/instrumentation.
  • Conduct troubleshooting of refinery-wide instrumentation systems.
  • Provide support/quality assurance for ongoing projects.
  • Coordinate plant efforts in performing root cause analysis (RCFA), reviewing breakdowns and failures with the intention of eliminating root causes of the failures, increasing the on-stream plant reliability, and reducing costs.
  • Recommend instrumentation upgrades and oversee the upgrade process from initiation to completion.
  • Assist in a continuous improvement process by identifying new instrumentation technology that enhance profitability and reliability.
  • Assist with P&ID development and updating (as-built P&IDs) to reflect field changes.
  • Provide technical support to the maintenance department as needed, including supervision of instrumentation checks prior to system commissioning, and troubleshooting of instrument systems.
  • Develop and maintains Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Equipment Instrumented System Testing procedures.
  • Identify, assist in developing and maintain instrumentation preventative maintenance (PM) plans.
  • Coordinate design engineering efforts with control systems engineering.
  • Develop and maintains standardized specifications for instrumentation selection and installation.
  • Provide primary review of vendor/contractor instrumentation design to ensure compliance with refinery specifications and applicable safety codes.
  • Assist in training of maintenance and operations personnel.
  • Must be available to work during off-hours, especially for emergencies and turnarounds.
  • Must be able to work effectively with others at all levels and functional areas of the refinery.
  • Develop PM tasks in SAP to improve reliability of electrical/instruments.
  • Keep reliability superintendent informed on all activities, opportunities, and status of assigned responsibilities.
  • Perform control valve sizing calculations. Also responsible for sizing & selection of orifice plates and other flow measurement devices.
  • Responsible for control loop tuning; control optimization.
  • Participate in the MOC (Management of Change) process.
  • Assist with a variety of other engineering initiatives for the reliability team.
  • Other duties as assigned.


The Requirements 

To meet the basic qualification for this role, you will have legal authorization to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or visa sponsorship. To be a good fit for the Instrumentation Reliability Engineer opportunity, you will have: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering required
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Proficient in AutoCAD a plus
  • Three (3)+ years of experience working at or directly supporting a petrochemical or similar industrial facility preferred.
  • SAP knowledge and navigation skills, such as reviewing work orders, PMs, and equipment history
  • Understanding and experience implementing the Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Design/installation experience in a refinery or manufacturing environment desired. 
  • Specific experience with Foxboro IA DCS, PLC controls, pneumatic/electronic I/O devices, UPS systems and VFD controls desired.

  • Must have ability to read and interpret data; prepare written communications and reports.
  • Must have ability to squat, kneel, crouch and lift, grab and carry equipment weighing up to 30 pounds (one and two handed).
  • Must have physical ability to utilize office communications and computer equipment.
  • Must be available to respond to facility emergency and/or business related needs during off-hours.
  • Ability to stand and walk.
  • Ability to see with 20/40 vision (corrective lenses acceptable).
  • Ability to hear (hearing aids acceptable) to be able to communicate with internal and external individuals, and for safety purposes.
  • Some reaching overhead, gripping, wrist movement, and finger dexterity,
  • Must have and use excellent communications skills.


Work environment

  • Full-time.
  • Schedule:  9/80, typically works on site through maintenance day Monday through Friday
  • Must be available to work during off-hours to include staff coverage needs, emergencies and turnarounds.
  • Requires after-hours work as needed - which can include late night-hours, holidays, and weekend work, including rotating 24 hour on-call status as assigned.
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Must work indoors and outdoors at time in inclement weather.
  • May be exposed to heat, noises, vibration, humidity, smoke, fumes, dust, gases, paints and thinners.
  • May be exposed to rain and other weather conditions. Safety glasses, goggles, earplugs, gloves, H2S & other gas monitors, approved Safety shoes, mask, hard hat, Nomex and at times respirator.
