Title:  Optimization Planning Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY

  • This high visibility position is primarily tasked with creating refinery wide operating plans that are safe, feasible, and economically optimized.   The tools to create these plans are the refinery LP (Haverly GRTMPS Linear Program), crude assay program (Haverly HCAMS) and yield spreadsheet – this position involves both using and maintaining these tools.  The person in this role is expected to generate support and enthusiasm from Hawaii Operations and Houston Commercial/Management for the operating plan through influence and effective communication skills.  Lastly, the successful candidate will also perform capital budget project economic analysis and communicate the results to Management.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

 

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, required.

 

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

  3-5 years of oil refining experience in Process Engineering and/or Operations required

  5–10 years of oil refining experience, especially in Planning and Economics, Operations and Process Engineering preferred

Experience running a LP (Haverly GRTMPS preferred but PIMS is acceptable).

  Experience building and maintaining a LP (Haverly GRTMPS preferred but PIMS is acceptable)

  Experience using Haverly HCAMS to process crude assays.

  Experience scheduling and managing crude ships

  Must also have computer skills including proficiency with Windows and Microsoft Office suite programs, especially Excel.

This position requires organization and communication skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and production requirements.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Runs Linear Program to evaluate near term refinery operations and help build an economically optimized plan.  Communicates plan to refinery and corporate. Presents 3 month plan for Hawaii’s refinery complex to refinery and headquarters leadership, including the CEO, during Monthly Operating Plan meetings.
  2. Coordinates all refinery LP model changes and updates with the assistance of Haverly and/or outside consultant help as needed. Runs LP Model weekly to select crudes to purchase.
  3. Occasionally update crude assays in HCAMS and/or HCOMET (shared responsibility). 
  4. Responsible to run and maintain the yield tool (Excel using HCAMs).  This tool is used weekly to generate the crude schedule and yields that form the basis for production, inventory and financial forecast for the Hawaii region.
  5. Works with the refinery Technical and Operations groups to initiate, track, and finalize Crude Assay evaluations.  Communicates the approved safe operating window for each crude and crude blend with refinery Operations, Management, and corporate headquarters personnel.
  6. Performs economic analysis on production opportunities and helps monitor unit optimization.
  7. Periodically performs LP backcast analysis for refinery and reports results to leadership, including the CEO, during Monthly Operating Plan meetings.
  8. Develops weekly spreadsheet crude charge plan, crude ship mooring cadence, interacting with refinery Ops and headquarters scheduler. Principal contact on crude ship windows and plan feasibility.
  9. Assists in generating weekly Production Planning spreadsheets.
  10. Communicates crude run plan/actual/forecast and anticipated constraints to refinery leadership during weekly Refinery Production Planning meetings.
  11. Engages technical skills to improve spreadsheet tools that are used for economic analysis and blending.  Creates new spreadsheet tools as needed.
  12. Other job duties are required and directed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Works 9 hour shifts, on a 9/80 schedule.  Must be able to take call outs and work overtime as needed
